Day 190

Day 190 dawned clear and hopeful in Seahaven Springs, as Norma Quist returned home from Seahaven General fit as a fiddle, and a rainbow arced across the sky like a benediction over the town. The bakery queue stretched out the door—the kind of good-natured gathering where neighbors catch up on the painted front doors, the divided opinions about Sal's new chowder, and the heron that has decided Miller's Pond is now its throne. As evening fell, the light turned almost preternaturally golden, catching Gus and Sal as they each ordered one for the road, then stood pleasantly confused about which road they'd meant to take. Somewhere above it all, someone practiced the same eight bars of piano—a little melody the whole town has come to love—while Rex polished glasses and told his sailing stories with the weather finally cooperating with his narrative. It was the kind of night that reminds you why people stay in small towns, even when the world is wide and strange.
