Day 429 brought a quiet Friday to Seahaven Springs—the kind where the most pressing matters were hedge diplomacy and mysterious postcards, where a seagull's larceny went uncorrected and an umbrella waited patiently by the café for its owner to remember it existed. When rain arrived mid-afternoon, the whole town seemed to deploy their brollies in perfect synchrony, as if someone had sent out a memo; and when it cleared just as suddenly, a rainbow hung over the town in that frankly show-offy way that made you believe in good timing again. Somewhere in all of it, meetings happened, words were kept, doors were repainted, and the little town ticked along—a place where nothing whatsoever happens, and yet everything is somehow always going on.
