Gus and Marla emerged from Seahaven General ready to rejoin the world—Marla's already back behind the counter dispensing wisdom and coffee—while the rain that swept through town this morning has given way to a rainbow so perfectly angled the editors suspect the sky itself is showing off. The traveling garden gnome has moved again (nobody's confessing), a seagull remains unrepentant about Elaine's sandwich, and somewhere in the mail that arrived today sits a lighthouse postcard with Truman's name on it, because the universe, it seems, knows what makes him smile. Tonight the town drifts toward The Salty Gull for Sunday supper, and somewhere in all of this—the recovered friends, the mysterious postcard, the hedge diplomacy, the rain-washed streets—Seahaven Springs is exactly as it should be: nothing bad ever happening, but something always, always going on.
