What a day it was in Seahaven Springs—Hal's homecoming from the hospital was celebrated with the kind of quiet relief that only a small town knows, while the clocks at Town Hall and the bakery continued their two-minute disagreement like an old couple who've learned to live with it. Truman discovered he and Elaine had both entered the kite-flying contest, a revelation that seemed to delight them both, and somewhere in the afternoon his kitchen radio decided to cooperate with his singing, badly and joyfully. The traveling garden gnome made another mysterious appearance on someone else's porch, Kip's head cold landed them in Seahaven General under Dr. Pratt's watchful eye, and the heron at Miller's Pond remained utterly unmoved by anyone's schedule but its own—much like Seahaven Springs itself, which continued on its gentle way, asking nothing of anyone but to be present for it.
