Rex emerged from the sheriff's office with nothing but a stern word and his dignity intact, just in time to polish the good glasses at The Anchor, where the night unfolded in its typical lovely chaos — Bram played piano he cannot play, Elaine explained boats with the same dreamy certainty she brings to tomatoes, and the Ferris family held court in various states of jubilation, from Orson's storytelling to Milo's alphabetical compliments to young Lark's losing negotiation with a bar stool. Meanwhile, little Wilf slept soundly in Bev's arms at home, and Hattie Whitlow rested comfortably at Seahaven General, already receiving visitors and well-wishes from the town that loves her — because that's what we do here. Even the rose bushes had their victory over Truman again, and somewhere in the night, the traveling garden gnome moved to yet another porch, its mysterious courier still gloriously unidentified.
