What a day in Seahaven Springs! Truman sang badly along to his favorite song this morning, then spent the afternoon beachcombing when the tide went out further than usual—though something curious seemed to be tracking his movements through the hedges. Meanwhile, the town rallied around Elaine after a gull made off with her sandwich for the umpteenth time, and by evening, half of Seahaven had settled into the warm glow of sitting outside, content as the famous traveling garden gnome made yet another mysterious relocation. Even Gus Tidewater found his way to The Anchor's piano, where he proceeded to play it exactly as badly as one might expect, and somewhere in town, someone practiced the same eight bars again—a small, persistent song that the whole town has come to love. The lights flickered once, the rainbow faded, and Seahaven Springs settled into another perfectly ordinary evening, where nothing bad ever happens, but something is always, always going on.
