A fog rolled in off the bay and stopped, as if at attention, at the very edge of town—Gus watched it arrive and said nothing, which everyone knows means he loved it. Down at the bakery, the queue stretched all the way to the door, but nobody minded; the bread smell had already claimed the square and half of anyone's afternoon productivity. Sal Marino's back gave out, and Dr. Pratt, delighted by the excuse for observation, kept him at Seahaven General where Rex could worry from the café across the street. And at The Anchor, Fern Gorse and Flo Tidewater had words over the jukebox—nothing too serious, just the kind of spirited difference that led Sheriff Brody to invite Fern to cool off in the holding cells for the night, which everyone agreed was exactly the sort of quiet Fern needed.
