Day 396 painted Seahaven Springs in soft watercolors: the orchard bloomed its brief masterpiece, Bev returned from the hospital hale and ready to bore the insurance office back into shape, and the bakery queue grew so gloriously long that even the newcomers understood it was less a line and more a gathering. Little mysteries floated like clouds—an umbrella patient by the café door, a drip that Marla met with a bucket and aplomb, and somewhere on the dock, a gull seemed to be winning something against young Abel. As the light turned almost impossibly kind and the rain began to fall, Seahaven Springs tucked itself in under a dozen synchronized umbrellas, and somewhere in the sweet ordinary dark, a harmonica hummed a lonely, secret song.
