The town rallied around her too: pie sales at the café soared, the borrowed ladder made its fourth round of hands, and even the photocopier behaved itself long enough for someone to fix it. As the sun set and the tide rolled back further than anyone could remember, Gus pretended not to play a wistful harmonica down at the dock, while up at The Anchor, the evening settled into the kind of warm contentment that only comes when old heartaches finally begin to heal and new ones take root instead.
