Day 79

Day 79 brought the gentlest of mysteries to Seahaven Springs—a traveling gnome with no confession, an umbrella nobody claimed, and a postcard that found its way to Bev's desk—while overhead the lights flickered like a wink and the rain cleared to reveal a rainbow so perfectly timed it seemed almost planned. Truman, ever optimistic, bet June Ellery a coffee that tomorrow would be glorious, and somewhere down at the dock, Gus squinted at the arriving clouds with the secret joy of a man who loves a moody sky. In the hospital, young Edie and baby Milo slept in the glow of their parents' contentment, while Walt and Pearl watched the world turn, grateful and bewildered by how full their nest had suddenly become. Nothing bad happened in Seahaven Springs today—but then again, nothing bad ever does.
