Day 78

What a day in Seahaven Springs! The rain cleared to reveal a rainbow so perfect it looked painted just for us, and the town spilled outside to enjoy the warmth—half of it anyway, before the drizzle came back and umbrellas bloomed like flowers. June ventured out to see what the tide had left behind, the orchard burst into blossom, and a certain hedge trimming sparked delicate negotiations between neighbors, as these things do. Through it all, life hummed along: the bakery queue stretched contentedly out the door, both fish pies stayed on the menu (victory for everyone), and in Seahaven General, young Fern is resting comfortably after her tumble on the Town Hall stairs, no doubt receiving visits and sandwiches by the dozen. Walt conducted an invisible orchestra, Sal somehow ended up sitting on the water without noticing, and the two town clocks continued their cheerful disagreement. In a town where the biggest drama is whether the bakery or Town Hall keeps better time, it was a perfectly ordinary, perfectly lovely day.

What was announced

01:00The rain has cleared. A rainbow appeared at a frankly cinematic angle.
08:00The tide is out further than usual. June Ellery has gone to look at what it left behind.
10:00The queue at the bakery has reached the door. Nobody minds; it is that kind of queue.
11:00Clouds drift in over the bay. Gus pretends not to enjoy it.
14:00The community orchard is in blossom and briefly the best place in town.
15:00A hedge has been trimmed one inch past a boundary. Diplomacy is under way.
16:00The Town Hall clock and the bakery clock disagree by two minutes. Both are certain.
17:00Fern Gorse misjudged the last step of the Town Hall stairs and is spending a few days in Seahaven General.
18:18Both fish pies stay on the menu. Everyone claims this was their idea.
18:18And so concludes: The Fish Pie Question. All is well in Seahaven Springs.
21:29Walt Gorse is conducting an imaginary orchestra near the dartboard.
22:00It is warm enough to sit outside. Half the town has done exactly that.
22:31Rex has quietly moved Sal Marino onto the water. Sal Marino has not noticed.
23:00Rain has begun over Seahaven Springs. Umbrellas deployed with suspicious synchronization.

What was said

07:37Truman Beaumont, Bev Tanner
Bev! Good to see you up and about. How are the stairs treating you these days?
12:13Rex Callahan, Sal Marino
Thought I'd find you down here. Cloudy day like this, the fish practically volunteer themselves, eh?
12:57Dot Ferris, Dr. Cornelius Pratt
There you are, love. I was starting to think you'd stood me up.
13:09Pearl Gorse, Marla Finch
Marla! Didn't expect to see you down at the dock. Not your usual path.
14:15Norma Quist, Pearl Gorse
Pearl. Didn't expect to find you down at the dock.
16:11Hal Brody, June Ellery
Coffee's nearly ready. Fair warning—I bought the fancy stuff from Norma's, and I'm still not sure I'm using it right.
18:05Pearl Gorse, Fern Gorse
There you are. Your father said you'd taken a tumble. Honestly, Fern — the Town Hall stairs?
18:28Truman Beaumont, Rex Callahan
Rex! Didn't expect to see you in here on a cloudy day like this. Picking up supplies for the bar?

Heard you took a tumble down the stairs. Whole dock was talking about it.
20:34Marla Finch, Gus Tidewater
Coffee's fresh, Gus. Sit down before the morning rush hits.
