Through it all, Truman found himself asking Elaine Whitlow if they were even—some old debt or kindness settled between neighbours—while fishermen pretended not to enjoy the cinematic clouds, Edie Gorse taught a chorus-less song to anyone who'd listen, and Sal's mackerel grew larger with each retelling. By evening, the sun broke through on cue, as it always does, and Seahaven Springs settled into that particular peace that comes only after a day when nothing bad happened, but something was always, always going on.
