Day 1997 brought fog, rain, and one of those rainbows that makes you believe in things you can't quite name. Truman and Elaine finished their bake-off practice with a flourish, while Sal found himself under Dot's careful watch at Seahaven General with a troublesome back — though the stream of visitors bearing shortbread samples suggested the town's sympathy came in sugary form. A mysterious postcard arrived for Bev, an unclaimed umbrella lingered by the café like a patient friend, and somewhere in town a front door had been repainted overnight, already sparking the kind of warm speculation that fills Seahaven Springs mornings. The ladder continued its weekly pilgrimage from house to house, the bees hummed their ancient song in the orchard, and Rex declared twice over that this was the finest town in the world — which, if you'd been here to see it, you might have believed too.
