The town's small mysteries continued their gentle rotation—the traveling garden gnome appeared on yet another porch with no culprit in sight, a harmonica whispered from the dock though its player swore it wasn't him, and two clock faces in town continued their stubborn disagreement by exactly two minutes. Perhaps most delightfully, Truman Beaumont discovered that his neighbor Elaine Whitlow has entered the same kite-flying contest he has, which means some wind-swept rivalry—and maybe something more—is on the horizon. In Town Hall, June stamped a form with particular joy: it had been filed correctly the first time, a small miracle that will sustain them for weeks.
