Gus Tidewater—gruff Gus, harmonica-playing Gus—has officially stepped out with Marla Finch, and the café has spent the entire afternoon processing this delightful news with the kind of warm intensity usually reserved for weather systems. The town itself seemed to celebrate: bread smells drew folks from their work, rain and rainbows arrived in perfect narrative order, and even the traveling garden gnome made a mysterious new appearance on someone's porch, which is either a blessing or a prank depending on who you ask. By evening, the whole town was drifting toward The Salty Gull for Sunday supper, umbrellas folded away, hearts light, and Gus pretending—very unconvincingly—that he wasn't moved by any of it.
